What's new

This page lists the main changes in Mermaid Diagrams for Confluence and Jira, newest first.

Mermaid 12 (October 2026)

Diagrams now render with Mermaid 12.1, the same engine as the official Mermaid Live Editor. Code you copy from mermaid.live renders the same in Confluence and Jira, and the other way round.

  • New look for many diagram types. Flowcharts, sequence, class, state, entity relationship and requirement diagrams use Mermaid's new neo look and redux-color colors by default.
  • ELK layout by default. Flowchart, state, class, entity relationship and requirement diagrams are laid out with ELK, which often gives tidier diagrams with fewer crossing lines.
  • Appearance lives in the diagram code. Set theme, look and layout in a config block at the top of the diagram, exactly as on mermaid.live. See Diagram Theming.
  • New themes and looks. Themes neo, redux and redux-color, each with a dark variant, and the handDrawn look.
  • Dark mode. A diagram without a theme in its code follows each reader's light or dark Confluence or Jira theme. A theme set in the code is always used.
  • Architecture diagrams with icons. Use cloud and technology logos (logos:aws-lambda, logos:kubernetes) and general icons (mdi:server, mdi:account-group). The icons ship inside the app, so nothing is loaded from outside Atlassian.
  • More diagram types, including architecture diagrams, Kanban boards, packet diagrams, use case and Venn diagrams. See the Mermaid syntax reference.
  • Faster snippet gallery. Snippet previews are pre-rendered images, so the gallery opens instantly. New snippets show architecture icons and the theme, look and layout settings.

Browser requirements

Mermaid 12 needs a current browser: Chrome, Edge or Firefox released since early 2024, or Safari 17.4 or later (iOS 17.4 on iPhone and iPad). Older browsers can't render diagrams.
