Get started with External Share
In about 10 minutes you'll install External Share & Public Links for Jira, set a safe sharing policy, and send a first public link to someone without a Jira account.
Before you beginβ
- You need to be a Jira admin to install the app and set its sharing policy. If you aren't one, ask your admin to do the first two parts, then start at Share your first work item.
- Pick a work item that is fine to show outside your company for your first link.
Install the appβ
- In Jira, select Apps > Explore more apps.
- Search for External Share & Public Links, then select the app.
- Select Get app and follow the prompts.
When the installation finishes, Share Public Link appears in the Actions (β―) menu of every work item and in the Apps menu.
Set the sharing policyβ
Every Jira user can share work items and boards straight after installing. Filters can't be shared until you choose which spaces may be shared.
- Select Settings (the gear icon) > Apps, then select Share Public Link in the sidebar.
- Select the Sharing Policy tab.
- Under Projects that can be shared, select Only these projects, then add the spaces whose content is safe to share outside your company.
- Optional: under Link Expiry Policy, set a default expiry, such as 30 days, so new links stop working on their own.
- Select Save changes.
For the full list of settings and a recommended setup, see Sharing policy settings.
Share your first work itemβ
-
Open a work item in one of the spaces you allowed.
-
Select Actions (β―) > Share Public Link. The Share work item window opens.
-
On the Content tab, turn on the sections to show, for example Attachments and Comments.
-
Select Preview as viewer to see the page as your viewer will, then close the preview.
-
Select Create link, then select Copy link.

-
Paste the link into a private browser window to check it, then send it to your viewer.
Next stepsβ
- Share a board: share a sprint, a backlog or a Kanban board.
- Share a filter: share work items from several spaces as one live table.
- Protect a link with a password: ask viewers for a password first.
- Give each audience its own link: one link per client, vendor or team.
- Data security and privacy: answers for your security review.
