Known Limitations

Collaboration

  • No real-time collaboration. Unlike the hosted excalidraw.com, the Confluence integration does not support live multi-user co-editing. Only one user can edit a diagram at a time. If two users open the same diagram in edit mode simultaneously, the last save will overwrite the other.

Platform

  • Atlassian Cloud only. Excalidraw for Confluence is a Forge-based app and is only available for Confluence Cloud instances. It is not compatible with Confluence Data Center or Server.
  • Diagrams are not indexed for search. Text content inside diagram elements (labels, annotations) is not included in Confluence full-text search results. Search will find the page itself but not the text within diagrams.

Libraries

  • Libraries are stored per diagram. Custom .excalidrawlib files added to one macro are not automatically shared with other macros on other pages. Each diagram manages its own library.

Export

  • PDF export quality depends on Confluence's export engine. The rendering quality of diagrams in PDF exports is subject to the PDF export engine used by your Confluence instance and may differ slightly from the on-screen appearance.
  • Word export embeds the diagram as a raster image. When exporting to Word, the diagram is included as a PNG image, not as a vector or editable object.

Editor

  • The legacy Confluence editor is not supported. The Excalidraw Diagram macro requires Confluence's current editor. Pages that still use the legacy editor cannot embed the macro.
  • Template previews do not render diagrams. In Confluence template previews, the Excalidraw Diagram macro appears as a placeholder, not a rendered diagram.
