Import & Export
Excalidraw for Confluence supports importing existing diagram files and exporting your diagrams in multiple formats. All import and export options are available inside the diagram editor.
Importing Diagramsβ
Import an .excalidraw Fileβ
If you have an existing diagram created in Excalidraw or any other Excalidraw-compatible tool, you can import it directly:
- Open the diagram editor by clicking Edit on the macro (or inserting a new macro).
- In the Excalidraw editor, open the hamburger menu (β°) in the top-left corner.
- Select Open and choose your
.excalidrawfile from your local machine. - The diagram is loaded into the editor. Make any adjustments and click Save.
Importing a file replaces the current diagram content. Make sure to export the existing diagram first if you want to keep it.
Exporting Diagramsβ
All export options are available from inside the Excalidraw editor.
Export as PNGβ
- Open the diagram editor.
- Open the hamburger menu (β°) β Export image.
- Select PNG and click Export.
- The PNG image is downloaded to your local machine.
Export as SVGβ
- Open the diagram editor.
- Open the hamburger menu (β°) β Export image.
- Select SVG and click Export.
- The SVG file is downloaded to your local machine.
SVG exports are resolution-independent and ideal for use in presentations, web pages, or high-quality print documents.
Export as .excalidrawβ
To save the raw diagram file for backup, sharing, or use in another Excalidraw environment:
- Open the diagram editor.
- Open the hamburger menu (β°) β Save to disk.
- The
.excalidrawfile is downloaded to your local machine.
PDF and Word Exportβ
When you use Confluence's built-in Export to PDF or Export to Word feature on a page that contains an Excalidraw macro, the diagram is automatically rendered and included in the exported document as an image.
No additional steps are required. This works with Confluence's standard export functionality.
Custom Librariesβ
You can upload your own .excalidrawlib library files to reuse custom shapes, icons, and component sets across your diagrams.
Add a Custom Libraryβ
- Open the diagram editor.
- Click the library icon (book icon) in the left toolbar.
- Click the β’β’β’ menu inside the library panel and select Open library file.
- Choose your
.excalidrawlibfile from your local machine. - Your custom shapes are now available in the library panel for this diagram.
Libraries are stored per diagram. A library added to one macro will not automatically appear in other macros on other pages.
Create Your Own Libraryβ
You can build a personal library from shapes you frequently reuse:
- Select one or more elements on the canvas.
- Click Add to library in the toolbar that appears.
- The shapes are saved to your library for the current diagram session.
To export your library for reuse elsewhere:
- Open the library panel.
- Click β’β’β’ β Export library.
- Save the
.excalidrawlibfile for later import.
