What Your AI Can Add to a Page

When you ask your AI client to create or update a Confluence page, it isn't limited to plain text. It can use the same building blocks you insert from the / menu in the editor - panels, a table of contents, action items, Jira issues, and most of Confluence's other built-in macros.

You don't need to know how any of this is written behind the scenes. Describe the page you want and name the elements you'd like on it:

"Create a page called 'Release 4.2 Plan' in the DEV space. Start with a table of contents, put the release date in an info panel, add a status label for each workstream, and finish with action items for the open tasks."

Headings, lists, tables, bold text and links work everywhere. The sections below cover everything else.

What you can ask for

Structure and layout

  • Table of contents - for the whole page, or for just one part of it
  • Columns and layouts - place content side by side
  • Expand - a collapsible section for details most readers can skip
  • Anchors - jump links to a specific spot on the page
  • Placeholder text (Lorem Ipsum) - filler for a draft layout

"Lay this out in two columns, with the summary on the left and the key numbers on the right, and put the raw data in an expand section."

Callouts and highlights

  • Info, note, tip and warning panels, plus custom panels with your own title and colour
  • Status labels - coloured lozenges such as DONE or AT RISK
  • Code blocks with syntax highlighting, line numbers and a title, and plain preformatted text
  • Emoji

"Put the rollback steps in a code block, and add a warning panel above it saying this must only run during the maintenance window."

Teamwork

  • Action items - tasks that can be ticked off, and that show up in task reports
  • @mentions of people on your site
  • Dates
  • Instructional placeholders - grey prompt text that disappears when someone starts typing, useful for templates

"End the page with action items for each follow-up, mention the owner of each one, and give each a due date."

  • Child pages and page tree - an always up-to-date list of the pages below
  • Include page - show the full content of another page
  • Excerpt and Excerpt include - mark a summary on one page and reuse it on others
  • Search box for a space or a page tree, and saved search results
  • Navigation map and page index

"Make this page a hub for the project: list its child pages and pull in the summary excerpt from the 'Architecture Overview' page."

Live reports

These are filled in by Confluence and stay current on their own - the AI places them, Confluence keeps them up to date.

  • Page properties and Page properties report - a summary table on each page, collected into one overview
  • Task report - open action items across pages or spaces
  • Content by label, recently updated, blog posts and a content report table
  • Change history, contributors and a contributors summary
  • Labels: labels list, popular labels, recently used and related labels
  • Spaces and dashboards: spaces list, space details, favourite pages, recently updated dashboard and global reports
  • Create from template - a button that creates a new page from a template

"Add a page properties table with owner, status and target date, so this page shows up in the project status report."

People

  • User profile - a card with the person's name and contact details
  • Profile picture
  • User list - the members of a group

Jira

  • A single Jira issue - shown inline with its summary and status
  • A list of issues from a Jira search, with the columns you choose
  • Jira chart - for example, a pie chart of issues by status
  • Roadmap planner - a simple timeline with lanes and bars

The AI only places these on the page. The issues themselves are fetched by Confluence from your connected Jira site whenever someone opens the page, so they always show the current status.

"Under 'Open work', add a table of the open bugs in the SCRUM project, with key, summary and status, and a pie chart of those issues by status."

Media and files

  • Embedded videos and web content - YouTube and other sites supported by Confluence's Widget Connector
  • Charts built from a table of numbers
  • Images from a web address
  • Attachments list, image gallery, and file previews for PDF, Word and other attached files

"Embed this YouTube video under the 'Demo' heading, and add a bar chart of the sign-ups per month from the table below."

Good to know

  • File previews need the file to be attached. The AI can place an attachments list, a gallery or a file preview, but it cannot upload files. Attach the file to the page yourself, before or after, and the preview appears.
  • Some older macros show as "Deprecated" in the editor. Page index, spaces list, related labels, recently updated dashboard, gallery, chart and the Word preview still display normally, but the Confluence editor labels them Deprecated. Jira issues show as "Jira Legacy" in the editor and also display normally.

Not available

The HTML, HTML Include and RSS Feed macros don't display in Confluence Cloud. If your AI adds one, the page is still created, but that spot shows an error instead of the content.
