πŸ“‚ FreeView for Jira (Share Issues with External Users)

Overview

FreeView for Jira enables you to securely share individual Jira issues with external stakeholders via unique, randomly-generated public links. Unlike native Jira anonymous access which exposes entire projects, FreeView gives you granular control - share only the specific issues you choose, with the ability to revoke or regenerate links at any time.

Key Benefits:

  • Selective Sharing: Share individual issues, not entire projects
  • View-Only Access: External users can view issue details but cannot modify anything
  • Enhanced Security: Each share generates a unique random link that can be revoked anytime
  • No License Required: Recipients don't need Jira accounts or licenses
  • Instant Access: Share links via email, chat, or any communication channel

Common Use Cases

1. Client Communication

Share specific bug reports or feature requests with clients without giving them full Jira access. Perfect for:

  • Providing status updates on reported issues
  • Demonstrating progress on custom development
  • Gathering feedback on specific tickets
  • Transparent communication without exposing internal processes

2. Vendor Collaboration

Work with external contractors, consultants, or vendors:

  • Share requirements or specifications for specific tasks
  • Allow vendors to track assigned work without Jira licenses
  • Coordinate on integration issues or technical dependencies
  • Review deliverables linked to specific issues

3. Executive & Stakeholder Reporting

Keep leadership informed without requiring them to learn Jira:

  • Share critical incidents or blockers requiring attention
  • Provide visibility into high-priority initiatives
  • Enable executives to review specific items without system access
  • Support board presentations with direct issue links

4. Customer Support

Enhance support transparency:

  • Let customers track their support tickets
  • Share resolution details and root cause analysis
  • Provide proof of issue completion
  • Build trust through transparent communication

5. Cross-Organizational Collaboration

Work across company boundaries:

  • Share issues with partner organizations
  • Coordinate on joint projects with external teams
  • Facilitate open-source or community contributions
  • Enable collaboration without VPN or SSO complexity

Features

  • Individual Issue Sharing: Share specific Jira issues one at a time, maintaining complete control over what's accessible
  • Randomly Generated Links: Each share creates a unique, unpredictable URL for enhanced security
  • View-Only Access: External users can see issue details, comments, and attachments but cannot edit or comment
  • Instant Revocation: Revoke or regenerate links at any time to immediately cut off access
  • No Authentication Required: Recipients don't need Jira accounts, licenses, or credentials
  • Easy Sharing: One-click sharing from the issue's Actions menu
  • Access Tracking: Monitor which issues have been shared and manage all active links
  • Zero Configuration: Works out-of-the-box with no permission scheme modifications required

How to Use

  1. Install the app from the Atlassian Marketplace
  2. Open any Jira issue you want to share
  3. Click the "Actions" menu (β‹―) in the top-right corner
  4. Select "Share Public Link" from the menu
  5. Copy the generated link and share it with your external stakeholders via email, chat, or any channel

The recipient can access the issue immediately without logging in. You can revoke or regenerate the link anytime from the same menu.

Why Not Use Native Jira Anonymous Access?

Jira has built-in anonymous access, but it's risky and limited. It requires making entire projects public with no way to selectively share individual issues or revoke access to specific content. This approach exposes all project data to the internet and creates significant security and compliance risks.

FreeView provides a secure alternative with granular control - share only what you need, when you need it, with the ability to revoke access anytime.
