Update From Free Version to the Latest Paid Version

If you already use the free version of our app in Jira Cloud, upgrading to the latest paid version is simple and safe.

Atlassian Marketplace handles app upgrades automatically, and your existing app configuration and data remain connected to the same installation in most cases.

This guide explains how Jira administrators can upgrade to the latest paid version and start using the newest features.


What Changes When Upgrading?​

When an Atlassian Marketplace app changes from Free to Paid via Atlassian, Atlassian treats this as a major app update that requires administrator approval.

After upgrading, you will get:

  • Access to the latest app features and improvements
  • Ongoing support and maintenance
  • Access to future releases
  • Atlassian-managed billing and licensing
  • Optional trial period provided by Atlassian Marketplace

Important Information Before Updating​

Before you start, please review the following:

Your Existing Data Stays Intact​

The app upgrade updates the Marketplace version of the app. Your existing configuration and stored data remain associated with the installed app unless explicitly documented otherwise.

Jira Administrator Access Is Required​

Only Jira or organization administrators can approve Marketplace app upgrades and manage app billing.

Atlassian May Require Manual Approval​

Changing an app from free to paid is considered a major version update in Forge apps and requires manual customer approval in the Atlassian administration area.

A Free Trial May Be Available​

Atlassian Marketplace allows cloud app trials before payment starts. Trial availability and billing behavior are managed directly by Atlassian.


How to Update to the Paid Version

Step 1 β€” Open Atlassian Administration​

Open:

  • admin.atlassian.com

Log in with your administrator account.


Step 2 β€” Open Connected Apps​

In Atlassian Administration:

  1. Select your organization
  2. Open Apps
  3. Select Manage your apps

This opens the Connected apps screen where installed Marketplace apps are managed.


Step 3 β€” Find the App​

Locate our app in the installed apps list.

If a paid upgrade is available, Atlassian will show:

  • an available update
  • trial option
  • or license-related action

Depending on your billing setup and Atlassian rollout stage, wording may differ slightly.


Step 4 β€” Approve the Upgrade​

Open the app details and approve the available update.

Because the app changed from free to paid, Atlassian requires administrator confirmation before applying the new version.

After approval:

  • the latest version is installed automatically
  • the app remains connected to your Jira site
  • existing app configuration continues to work

Step 5 β€” Start Trial or Configure Billing​

Depending on your Atlassian billing model, you may see:

  • a free trial option
  • monthly billing confirmation
  • annual quote flow

Marketplace cloud apps are billed through Atlassian and follow the billing cycle of your Jira Cloud subscription.


How Long Does the Update Take?

Usually only a few minutes.

According to Atlassian documentation:

  • Forge app updates are detected automatically after deployment
  • updates are distributed automatically after approval
  • some updates may take additional time during Atlassian maintenance windows.

Will users lose data after the update?​

Normally no. Marketplace app upgrades update the installed app version while keeping the existing installation connected to your Jira site.

Do users need to reinstall the app?​

No. In most cases the existing installation is upgraded directly through Atlassian Marketplace.
